Every Monday, I highlight a non-profit related to history or the arts, a historical society, preservation group or friends group whose main objective is to promote the historical and artistic history of New Jersey.
This week, I am featuring the Jersey City & Harsimus Cemetery Volunteers. The cemetery was established in 1829 but by 2008 had become abandoned by its Board of Trustees. A new group of volunteers was formed and adopted the cemetery in 2008. Since then, the volunteers have spent countless hours cutting away years of overgrown weeds, trees, and brush, removed trash, reset headstones, and reopened the caretaker's home. However, their job is far from over. The volunteers need continual help with the cemetery grounds and caretaker house maintenance and repairs, assisting visitors, database entry of the historic cemetery records, sign making, grant writing, event planning, and exciting fundraising activities. The group envisions the eventual development of a museum and learning center to provide historical education and increase public knowledge and appreciation of the cemetery's historical significance and natural beauty.
