Antiques and Collectibles Faire

Celebrate Labor Day with your family and friends at the Ocean County Historical Society's Antiques and Collectibles Faire on Saturday at the Ocean County Parking Garage at the intersection of Madison and Hadley Avenues in Toms River, NJ from 9:00 am - 4:00 pm. Join the fun as you shop for antiques and collectibles as well as items crafted by a local wool spinner, basket maker, and decoy carver. Buy a 50-50 raffle ticket sponsored by OCHS.

History buffs will be thrilled to know that they can chat with Civil War reenactors who make history come alive. Children are welcome to participate in games and crafts of the Civil War era. Families may visit the medical tent and learn more about the work of the full Union surgeon, carrying the rank of major, who will display surgical, dental, and other medical instruments and explain where the full surgeon worked during the Civil War.

There will be a classic car display presented by N.J. Shore Regional National Chrysler Products Club. Food trucks will be available. Tour the OCHS museum and its current exhibitions. The event will be held rain or shine! For more information, visit www.oceancountyhistory.org.

Battery Gunnison/New Peck Restoration

The Army Ground Forces Association volunteer group will be dressed in WWII era uniform performing restorations projects and interpreting Battery Gunnison/New Peck and its 6-inch guns at Sandy Hook, a unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. Visitors are invited to stop by on this work and training day to chat and learn more about the historic time period of March 1943, the preparation for the May 1943 reactivation of Battery Gunnison/New Peck, and the restoration and preservation projects currently underway. This free event will be held from 12:00 noon - 5:00 pm at Battery Gunnison, Lot G Beach Plaza. Historic Delaware River Series Explores 1955 Flood

Learn about the deadly Delaware River flood of 1955 that killed nearly 100 people, destroyed bridges and washed away homes and summer camps at the Hunterdon Land Trust Farmers Market on Sunday, August 18 at 10:00 am. The market is located at the Dvoor Farm, 111 Mine Street, Flemington, NJ.

In the Hunterdon Land Trust’s second Historic Delaware River Series program, Mary A. Shafer, author of Devastation on the Delaware: Stories and Images of the Deadly Flood of 1955, will discuss in words and images the terrifying flood and its tragic aftermath on the 64th anniversary of the event.

In August of 1955, two hurricanes slammed into the Carolinas and charged north. By the time they hit the Hunterdon County area, both had weakened to tropical storms, but dumped heavy rains all through the Delaware Valley.

52nd Annual Goschenhoppen Folk Festival

The Goschenhoppen Historians will be hosting their annual folk festival this Friday and Saturday. 

You may be asking what is Goschenhoppen? Goschenhoppen is one of the oldest continuously existing Pennsylvania German communities in America. Their annual festival showcases the daily life of the Pennsylvania Germans in the 18th and 19th centuries. Over 500 volunteers, dressed in period clothing, use authentic tools to recreate traditional home skills, trades, pastimes, foods, and folk music. 

Learn about the Antes Plantation on Friday between 12:00 noon and 8:00 pm and Saturday, 10:00 am - 6:00 pm. Enjoy the authentic interpretation of the Pennsylvania German folk culture. Become a part of and learn the traditions, skills and trades of the Pennsylvania Germans. Allaire founded the Howell Iron Works in 1822 as an iron factor town.  Now as a living history museum, we like to take a day and celebrate our almost 200 year history.  We will have craft demonstrations, speeches, and fanfare. All of our guilds will be out demonstrating their crafts.  This is a great day to come out see what the village is all about if you are interested in volunteering.
