Symposium on Gen. Washington's 1778-79 Middlebrook Cantonment

On Saturday, June 8, 2019 the Heritage Trail Association will sponsor a daylong symposium about the 1778 - 1779 Middlebrook Cantonment (Encampment) of Gen. George Washington and the Continental Army.

The symposium will be held at the Bridgewater Municipal Building (100 Commons Way, Bridgewater, NJ) and will feature many topics relating to the army’s six-month cantonment in the Watchung Mountains. Among the speakers and topics are:

  • The Importance of the Watchung Mountains to the Continental Army, Mark DiIonno, author and journalist 
  • Lessons Learned from Previous Encampments, Steven Elliott, winner of the 2017 Middlebrook research competition
  • Somerset County’s Middlebrook Resources, Thomas D’Amico, Somerset County Planner and reenactor
  • George Washington and the planning of his Indian Campaigns, Frank Esposito, Professor of History and Education, Kean University
  • The Beacon System, a historical entertainment with His Excellency George Washington (Sam Davis) and Lord Stirling (David Lang)
  • The First Military/Artillery Academy, John Seidel, archeologist, Associate Professor of Anthropology and Environmental Studies, Washington College, Chestertown, Maryland
The symposium will run from 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. The cost is $25, which includes lunch. After the symposium, the Crossroads of the American Revolution and the Heritage Trail will host Revolutionary Spirit Night with the Somerset Patriots baseball team.
