Friday - Saturday, September 8 - 9 - Sandy Hook, Monmouth County
Among the many celebrities who frequented the Lake Hopatcong area during the height of its popularity as a resort was Bud Abbott, just prior to teaming with Lou Costello to form arguably America's most popular and successful comedy team of the 1940s and 1950s.
The comedy of Abbott and Costello will be brought back to life at a film festival hosted by the Lake Hopatcong Historical Museum on Friday, Sept. 8, and Saturday, Sept. 9, at the historic Palace Theatre, 7 Ledgewood Ave., Netcong.
"Because of Lake Hopatcong's unique status as a resort, there were many entertainers and other interesting people who visited or summered here," said Marty Kane, president of the LHHM. "Over the past several years we've presented programs on such former residents and visitors as Lotta Crabtree, Joe Cook, Owen McGiveney and Thomas Edison."
The weekend event will feature three classic Abbott and Costello movies. "Abbott & Costello Meet Frankenstein" will be shown Friday at 8:00 pm. A double feature, with "The Time of Their Lives" and "Hold That Ghost" will be shown Saturday at 1:30 and 3:30 pm, respectively.
Despite the duo's past status, Kane noted, "Abbott and Costello's fame has faded, with today's youth being generally less familiar with their work. We hope to change that with this film festival."
Chris Costello, the daughter of Lou Costello, will be on hand Saturday evening to talk about family life with her father, field questions from the audience and sign memorabilia.
A live performance of the classic "Who's on First" sketch will also be staged Saturday evening by professional Abbott & Costello impressionists Gil Palmer and Lou Sciara, who have been mimicking the comedy duo's most popular routines for nearly 25 years.
The Saturday event will be at 8:00 pm, with doors opening at 7:30 pm. Separate-admission movie tickets, available in advance or at the door, are $10, $5 for children under 18. Tickets for the Saturday evening program are $25. A weekend pass, for full access to all movies and programs, is $40 and $30 for children under 18. Refreshments will be available. The General Settles In: Washington at Rockingham, September 1783
On Saturday, August 23rd, 1783 General and Mrs. Washington arrived at Rockingham, the Berrien family homestead, which had been rented by Congress for their use. As they settled into the place into the month of September, Washington was seen by members of Congress relaxing and even joking. He was looking forward to being under his "fig and vine" as he often wrote during this year. The battles were over and the return home soon at hand. On September 5, he and Martha hosted a large gathering, including "all the present members, Chaplains & great officers of Congress."
On Saturday from 11:00 am - 5:00 pm the General will be in residence once again at Rockingham. David Emerson of History on the Hoof, will embody Washington and his early stay in the area, looking back on the trials behind, at the tasks at hand and the impending future of long retirement from public life (or so he thought!).
Three main rooms of the historic house will be open with visitors able to "meet" the General and interact with him in an informal setting throughout the day. Accompanying him will be the Life Guard, a group of officers who served as his formal escort. There will be outdoor displays of military clothing and equipment and musket firings from time to time. In keeping with the spirit (if not the specifics) of the entertaining the Washingtons did at Rockingham, there will be outdoor pit-hearth cooking demonstrated by Diane Lingsch and an all-day variety of programming provided by Heart to Hearth Cookery on 18th -century ice cream, or "creamed ice" as Washington described the delicacy he enjoyed.
The event is free, but donations to Rockingham are always welcome! There will be refreshments available and the Museum Store will be open. Come one, come all to meet the General, who was about to "take his ultimate leave, in a short time, of the Military Character, and to bid a final adieu to the Armies he has so long had the honor to Command."
Rockingham is located at 84 Laurel Avenue, Kingston-Rocky Hill Rd. (Rte. 603) in Franklin Township, 1 mile north of Rte. 27 in Kingston, and 1 mile south of Rte. 518 in Rocky Hill. For more information, call 609-683-7132 or visit www.rockingham.net.

Treading the Path that with Tears Have Been Watered: The Underground Railroad in New Jersey
From the beginning of African enslavement in America, attempts to escape from bondage were a frequent form of resistance though dangerous and strongly suppressed. What became known as the Underground Railroad was a network of meeting points, secret routes, and safe houses used by enslaved people of African descent to escape into northern states and Canada.
Organized in small, independent groups of free Blacks, sympathetic allies, and abolitionists, secrecy was essential to ensure the safety of "travelers," "conductors," and "stationmasters." With its many all-Black communities as sanctuaries and as the base for Harriet Tubman's forays south to guide escaped slaves northwards, New Jersey played a pivotal role within the Underground Railroad.
Please join us at the Trent House as Dr. Epps highlights the struggles and triumphs experienced by those traveling the Underground Railroad to freedom.
Tickets are $10 for non-members and $8 for members. Program begins at 1:00 pm. Tickets available at the door. Complimentary light refreshments and tours of the museum will be available as part of the admission to the program. The presentation will held in the Visitor Center, which is handicapped accessible. Ample free parking. The Trent House Museum is located at 15 Market Street in Trenton, NJ adjacent to the Hughes Justice Complex. For more information, call 609-989-0087 or visit www.williamtrenthouse.org.

Sunday, September 10, 2017 - Sunday, May 13, 2018 - Morristown, Morris County
The Cutting Edge: Medicine in Morris County, 1876 - 1976
Morris County Historical Society will feature the many contributions Morris County doctors, hospitals, pharmaceutical companies and veterinarians have made to the field of medicine at both the local and global levels at its upcoming exhibit, "The Cutting Edge: Medicine in Morris County, 1876-1976." The exhibit will open on Sunday, September 10 and run through Sunday, May 13, 2018.
Morris County is a hub of innovation in the medical field. The "Grandfather of the Epidural," James Leonard Corning, MD, lived at Acorn Hall, now the MCHS headquarters; the country's first Doctor of Veterinary Medicine was born in Mount Olive; the biggest studies disproving the benefits of lobotomies took place at Greystone Park Psychiatric Hospital; and the Right-to-Die controversy first made national headlines through the case of Karen Ann Quinlan in the 1970s and 1980s.
Morris County also is home to The Seeing Eye, Bayer's North American Headquarters, and Morristown Medical Center, a nationally-ranked hospital in the fields of cardiology and orthopedics.
The exhibit will honor the 125th anniversary of Morristown Medical Center, include stories and photos of and objects from Greystone Park never before exhibited, and commemorate the 100th anniversary of the burning of the original All Souls' Hospital. It also will explore the history of The Seeing Eye, right-to-die cases, veterinarian medicine, local pharmaceutical giants, impact of diseases, such as tuberculosis and Spanish Flu, and notable medical professionals who treated Morris County residents.
A formal Exhibit Opening will be held on Thursday, September 21 at 6:00 pm. Morris County Historical Society is located at Acorn Hall, 68 Morris Avenue, Morristown, NJ and is open Wednesdays and Thursdays, 11:00 am - 4:00 pm, and Sundays, 1:00 - 4:00 pm. Admission, which includes the exhibits and landscaped grounds, is $6 for adults, $5 for seniors, $3 for students, and is free for children under 12 and MCHS members.
