Whitesbog Blueberry Festival
This year, they are celebrating the Whitesbog Preservation Trust's 30th Anniversary along with the Centennial of the Blueberry, with a Special Art Project that features the blueberry (New Jersey's State Fruit), the cranberry industry, Whitesbog's rich agricultural heritage and the New Jersey Pine Barrens' natural resources. This special exhibit will include Whitesbog's cranberry-label collection along with cranberry-labels banners as barn art, blueberry sculpture, Pinelands photography and a real Jersey Devil, among the various school entries.
Top attractions at the day-long festival include fifty of the Pinelands best crafters and an "artists row" featuring fine art and photography, a Model-T exhibit, Pinelands Antique Engine Association's displays, living history tours, and interactive experiences festival goers can enjoy throughout the day. For the children, activities such as the outrageously fun blueberry pie-eating contest, a hunt for the Jersey Devil, face painting, hands-on crafts, traditional games and blueberry picking, will keep the young ones entertained all day. Live bluegrass music by Home Cookin', the Basement Musicians, the Bad Dogz, Clan Suibhne, Valerie Vaughn and others will provide the perfect atmosphere for the festival, which the Burlington County Times has described as "a reminder that good old country life is alive and well" in the region.
The Pinelands, New Jersey's blueberry and cranberry industries and our region's rich history intersect in delicious ways in this corner of the state. History buffs can tour explore Whitesbog's agriculturalmuseum, visit the newly restored Cranberry Research Substation, tour a cottage that depicts what life was like for Whitesbog's workers in the 1920s, and shop in Whitesbog's authentic General Store. Fresh fruit enthusiasts will delight in picking their own blueberries at the celebration. Whitesbog is home to the world's oldest test fields for domesticated blueberries, which will be open at the Blueberry Festival to give people an opportunity to experience firsthand a bit of our State's agricultural history.
Parking is $8.00 per car and $5.00 per person arriving by foot, bike, or bus. All proceeds benefit the Whitesbog Preservation Trust in their continuing efforts to restore and interpret Historic Whitesbog Village and the surrounding Pinelands. Parking is set on the Whitesbog airstrip - a 2-minute drive from the festival grounds. Shuttle buses bring visitors from this remote parking area to the village throughout the day.

Quilt & Fiber Arts Show
On Saturday, visitors may vote for their favorite quilts in the Welcome Center at the Viewer’s Choice Quilt Show, and on Sunday continue to enjoy the display and see the winners. A rare wedding quilt, c. 1714, handmade by Cape May Countian Sarah Spicer, will be on display in the Welcome Center for its annual appearance. The quilt was restored in 2012 through a grant from the Cape May County Culture and Heritage Commission.
Yesteryear Quilters, in period clothing, will present a ‘hand-turning’ of 19th century quilting techniques at the Gazebo. Regional vendors are attending with quilting and sewing fabrics, yarn, baskets, supplies, and equipment to help inspire the creation of an heirloom project. If you would like to learn some new skills, Kathe Cressman will share some tips and tricks for knitters on both Saturday and Sunday afternoons. Seasoned knitters and newcomers to the craft will learn from these discussions. The Corson-Hand House, home to fiber arts demonstrations at the Village, will feature use of the “Great Wheel” which will be used along with wool preparation and dyeing. Bobbin lace making and tatting will also be demonstrated by a fourth generation artisan.
Opened in 2012, the Needle Arts Coop, located in the Village's Octagonal House, serves as a learning center for interactive lessons and information on handmade crafts and skills. Take-home kits and supplies will be available for purchase along with specialty items made by local and Village artisans.
Historic Cold Spring Village is a non-profit, open-air living history museum that portrays the daily life of a rural South Jersey community of the Early American period. It features 26 restored historic structures on a 30-acre site. From late June to early September, interpreters and artisans in period clothing preserve the trades, crafts and heritage of "the age of homespun." Fun and educational activities for children are featured Tuesday through Sunday, with special events every weekend through mid-September.

A new exhibit entitled "Asbury Park: The History of a Jersey Gem," opens Sunday at the Eden Woolley House, home of the Township of Ocean Historical Museum, 703 Deal Road, Ocean Township, NJ. Artifacts and photos tell the story of the city from its beginning in 1870 as the brainchild of businessman and avid Methodist James Bradley to its current rebirth. All will start at the burial "chapel," central to the cemetery, and only yards from the Broad Street Presbyterian Church, an historic structure maintained in virtually pristine original condition since the 1790s.

Lambert Castle, the Victorian-era mansion located on the Garrett Mountain Reservation on the border between Paterson and Clifton, will be home to an exhibit highlighting the Paterson Silk Strike of 1913 now through October 6, 2013. The exhibit, entitled "We Had to be Rebels: Remembering the Paterson Silk Strike of 1913." This year marks the centennial of the landmark 1913 Paterson Silk Strike, which would forever change the face of labor relations in the Silk City. Thousands of workers walked away from their looms to be herded into court rooms and jail cells in a strike that took months to resolve. Nathanael Greene's Rhode Island Homestead

Nathanael married Catherine Littlefield on July 20, 1774 at her uncle's mansion in Warwick, Rhode Island. Catherine, or Caty, as she was called by most, was born on February 17, 1755, to John and Phoebe Littlefield on the island of New Shoreham, now known as Block Island. Catherine's mother died in 1765, when she was only ten years old. Her father realized that Catharine was of the age when a woman's influence was absolutely necessary, so he sent her to live with his late wife's sister, for whom she was named, Catherine Ray and her husband, William Greene, in East Greenwich, Rhode Island. William Greene was the third cousin of Nathanael.
Together, Nathanael and Catherine had five children. Their first child, a son, was named George Washington Greene. In 1777, they had their first daughter and named her Martha Washington Greene. The Greene's held George and Martha Washington in high regard. Their other three children were Cornelia, Nathanael Ray, and Louisa Catharine. All five children were born during the Revolutionary War.
Nathanael's military and political life began in 1770 when he served as deputy to the Rhode Island General Assembly. He served in that position until 1772 and again in 1775. In October 1774, he helped to organize a militia company, known as the Kentish Guards. But due to a stiff knee that he developed during childhood, his fellow militiamen refused to allow him to act as an officer. After the first shots of the Revolution were fired in Lexington, Greene hurried to Boston. On June 22, 1775 Greene was made a brigadier general in the Continental Army. Quickly befriending General George Washington, he was placed in charge of the defenses of Brooklyn and on August 9, 1776 Greene was promoted to major-general in the Continental Army.
Greene became one of Washington's key advisers. He was present at the Battle of Trenton, New Jersey, on Christmas Eve, 1776, when he led the left column. On January 3, 1777 he again led the left column at the battle of Princeton and spent the winter of 1776-1777 at Morristown. In November 1777, after the fall of Fort Mifflin, Greene was sent to defend Fort Mercer, New Jersey, on the Delaware River, but he wisely evacuated the fort as powerful British forces started to encircle the garrison.
During the winter of 1777-1778 at Valley Forge, Greene was appointed to Quartermaster General by General George Washington. As quartermaster, his responsibilities included getting supplies to the army and organizing the army's camps. When he accepted the position, he reserved the right to also continue as a commanding general in the field. He used that right on June 28, 1778, at the Battle of Monmouth, when he assumed Line command after General Washington summarily ordered General Charles Lee from the field. Greene took over Lee's command for the day. On June 23, 1780, Washington briefly allowed Greene to command troops in the battle of Springfield, New Jersey.
In the south, the Continental Army under the command of Horatio Gates fell to the British. On October 5, 1780, Washington chose Greene as Gates' replacement to lead the army south of Delaware. Greene essentially became the second-in-command of the entire Continental Army. In the south, Greene would divide his meager army and retreat throughout North Carolina, dividing the Redcoats and essentially exhausting them. Green's greatest achievement was his race to the Dan River, where he took all the boats across, leaving the British stranded on the other side. Although Cornwallis surrendered in 1781, the resilient yet exhausted British troops would not withdraw from the South until December, 1782.
When Greene rode northward in 1783, he was greeted everywhere as a hero and he found himself as famous in the North as in the South. He met Washington at Trenton and together in October they visited the Continental Congress at Princeton. From Congress, Greene received permission to return home to Coventry, Rhode Island, and he resigned from the Continental Army on November 3, 1783.
That same year, General Greene's family moved from Coventry to Newport for a brief time and then to Mulberry Grove, Savannah, Georgia. The State of Georgia gave him a plantation on Cumberland Island as gratitude for his service. Greene sold his Coventry home to his brother, Jacob Greene and his wife Peggy, in 1783 and the structure remained in the Greene family for two more generations until 1899. Sometime in the mid to late-nineteenth century, a rear ell was constructed on the home and in the 1870s, the front door area was Victorianized with a bracketed hood and double window door. Upon the death of Elizabeth Margaret in 1899, the property was inherited by the children of her first marriage, Patience and Harris Inman. In 1915, the home was sold out of the family. For a brief period, the house was used an an apartment house and began to deteriorate.
Showing great concern for the property, four members of the Kent County Chapter of the Rhode Island Sons of the American Revolution purchased the property in 1919. The interior was restored in the early 1920s, shortly after the Nathanael Greene Homestead Association's purchase of the home. The first caretaker of the property actually lived in the house's rear ell, but by 1935, a caretaker's cottage was built on the property and is still occupied.
A second interior restoration was completed in 1990, which included a paint and wallpaper analysis. This analysis finally allowed historians to interpret the original colors and wallpapers used throughout the homestead's history. All but one of the rooms on the second floor have been decorated as they would have appeared in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. One bedroom has been decorated in the Victorian style with wallpaper and lace curtains to interpret the building's last live-in owner, Elizabeth Margaret, who lived at the site until 1899. The Nathanael Greene Homestead was declared a National Historic Landmark in 1972.
A short distance from the house, near the river, is the Greene family cemetery. The cemetery was established as early as 1786 when Miss Margaret Greene, daughter of Jacob (brother of Nathanael Greene) and Margaret Greene passed away. Twelve identified burials have been recorded, in addition to four field stone graves identified from an 1859 Providence Journal article as being Revolutionary War soldiers who were being nursed for smallpox at the homestead and perished during their stay. General Nathanael Greene and his wife are buried at Savannah and Cumberland Island, Georgia, respectively. Over the past few years, the cemetery and surrounding meadows have been cleared of the brush and trees that blocked its view from the homestead. Thanks to a dedicated core of volunteers, carrying on in the same spirit as the original founders of the Association in 1919, the Nathanael Greene Homestead stands as a preserved piece of Revolutionary history.

Situated on a hill, with what was once a commanding view of the the Pawtuxet River, is the Nathanael Greene Homestead in Coventry, Rhode Island. Although nature has reclaimed the view of the river, this 1770s homestead was saved in 1919 to serve as a museum and is an excellent example of the early preservation movement in the United States. For almost one hundred years, the Nathanael Greene Homestead Association has maintained the building and the property. The meadows that surround the building are being cleared once again by volunteers, a sign that possibly one day soon, a view of the river will be seen once again.
Nathanael Greene was born at the Forge and Grist Mill in Potowomut, Warwick, Rhode Island in 1742. His father, Nathanael Sr., was a Quaker minister. Nathanael Jr. received a traditional Quaker education in reading, writing, and simple math. He was trained in the family business as an ironmaster. The family forge was very successful and prompted the establishment of a second forge in Coventry, about ten miles away. By 1768, over one hundred families lived in the area surrounding present-day Coventry, which had become known as 'Greenville.' In 1770, Nathanael moved to 'Greenville' to oversee the forge and built a home for himself near it. The home and forge, which featured a trip hammer forge, covered eighty-three acres. In 1772, tragedy struck the site and a fire decimated the forge. The forge was rebuilt, but it did not survive into the nineteenth century.
The Georgian style home that Nathanael built was simple in design, reflective of his Quaker upbringings. The home is two-and-one-half stories tall and five bays wide. It is set on a foundation of random, sandy-brown granite ashlar. The exterior lacks ornamentation, but Nathanael's prosperity was demonstrated in the Greek-revival entrance, topped by a rectangular transom, flanked by fluted pilasters, and topped with a triangular pediment with dentils and a fan motif. This elaborate doorway draws the visitor's eyes to the main entrance. Each floor contains four rooms, two on each side, separated by a wide center hall. Each room has a paneled fireplace, connected to two large central internal chimneys. It has not been proven, but historians speculate that the hardware throughout the home may have been forged at the Greene family iron works. The home was originally called "Spell Hall," as indicated in one of Nathanael's letters. It is believed that one of the rooms in the home served as a classroom for the local children. Nathanael had a fondness for reading and had over three hundred volumes in his personal library.

Although Cornwallis surrendered in 1781, the resilient yet exhausted British troops would not withdraw from the South until December, 1782.

That same year, General Greene's family moved from Coventry to Newport for a brief time and then to Mulberry Grove, Savannah, Georgia. The State of Georgia gave him a plantation on Cumberland Island as gratitude for his service. Greene sold his Coventry home to his brother, Jacob Greene and his wife Peggy, in 1783 and the structure remained in the Greene family for two more generations until 1899. Sometime in the mid to late-nineteenth century, a rear ell was constructed on the home and in the 1870s, the front door area was Victorianized with a bracketed hood and double window door. Upon the death of Elizabeth Margaret in 1899, the property was inherited by the children of her first marriage, Patience and Harris Inman. In 1915, the home was sold out of the family. For a brief period, the house was used an an apartment house and began to deteriorate.
Showing great concern for the property, four members of the Kent County Chapter of the Rhode Island Sons of the American Revolution purchased the property in 1919. The interior was restored in the early 1920s, shortly after the Nathanael Greene Homestead Association's purchase of the home. The first caretaker of the property actually lived in the house's rear ell, but by 1935, a caretaker's cottage was built on the property and is still occupied.

A short distance from the house, near the river, is the Greene family cemetery. The cemetery was established as early as 1786 when Miss Margaret Greene, daughter of Jacob (brother of Nathanael Greene) and Margaret Greene passed away. Twelve identified burials have been recorded, in addition to four field stone graves identified from an 1859 Providence Journal article as being Revolutionary War soldiers who were being nursed for smallpox at the homestead and perished during their stay. General Nathanael Greene and his wife are buried at Savannah and Cumberland Island, Georgia, respectively. Over the past few years, the cemetery and surrounding meadows have been cleared of the brush and trees that blocked its view from the homestead. Thanks to a dedicated core of volunteers, carrying on in the same spirit as the original founders of the Association in 1919, the Nathanael Greene Homestead stands as a preserved piece of Revolutionary history.

The Popsicle

Summertime brings many things to the community, and one
special thing that comes through without fail is the ice cream man. The
whimsical music plays loud enough, that no matter where the kids are, their
small ears will hear it and they will come running. The truck slowly rolls
through the neighborhood, while harmonious music plays, signaling the area
where it will stop and wait for everyone to show up waving their money.
Snowcones, ice cream sandwiches, freeze pops, and the all time favorite, the Popsicle, are handed through the small window by the attendant. When all the people
have their treats, the music becomes louder as the truck pulls away from the
curb to deliver treats to another neighborhood.
Frank Epperson, an eleven-year-old native of San Francisco , California, was making a popular drink of
1905. One winter evening he mixed a soft drink powder, soda water, and tap
water together in a glass and stirred it with a wooden stick, and then placed
it on the porch outside to get cold. He became busy doing other things around
the house and forgot about his drink. The next morning, as he was leaving for
school, Frank came across the drink he had forgotten the night before. He
picked up the glass and examined the frozen concoction; thus, the birth of the Popsicle.
This was not the original name for the famous frozen juice.
For eighteen years the frozen concoction had no name and was not for sale. During
those eighteen years, Frank, along with his family and friends enjoyed the accidental
invention and in 1923 he filed for a patent with the United States Patent
Office. The first name he chose for the invention was “Frozen ice on a stick”.
Soon he decided the name was too long so he shortened it to the “Eppsicle” ice
pop. Frank began to produce the frozen treats in different flavors and his own
children referred to them as Popsicles. Liking the new name, he changed it with
the patent office and the invention became a household name that everyone knows
today. In 1924, Harry Burt, owner of the Good Humor Company of Youngstown , Ohio

Company (now known as Sara Lee Corporation), was so successful that Time Magazine named him “Duke of
Groceries”. In 1965, Cummings bought the Popsicle product line from Lowe and
started distributing the frozen treats across America . The marriage of twenty-one years
did not last too long, because in 1986 Gold Bond Ice Cream Company of Green Bay , Wisconsin New
York , bought the Popsicle line from Gold Bond foods,
and added it to their long list of products, sold worldwide.
In 1993, Unilever Good Humor purchased the Islay Klondike
Company, which produced the Klondike Bar, and during that same year, they
purchased the Breyer Ice Cream Company, changing the name to Good Humor-Breyer.
Today the company employs over 3,000 people and operates in nine manufacturing
facilities around the United
States , making it the world leader in the
ice cream market.

Organization of the Week: Nathanael Greene Homestead Association
Every Monday, I highlight a non-profit related to history or the arts, a historical society, preservation group or friends group whose main objective is to promote the historical and artistic history of the United States.
This week, I am featuring the Nathanael Greene Homestead Association in Coventry, Rhode Island. Founded in 1919, the Nathanael Greene Homestead Association owns and maintains the circa-1770 homestead that was originally built by Revolutionary War Major General Nathanael Greene. Since its original purchase, the Homestead Association has restored the structure to its late eighteenth century appearance by removing later additions. The Association also cares for the family cemetery located on the grounds and is in the process of clearing and restoring the surrounding woodlands to their period appearance.
The Nathanael Greene Homestead Association relies on memberships, fundraising, and countless volunteers to continue its mission. The Arrest of Royal Governor William Franklin

General Nathanial Heard, who led a detachment of militia troops from Woodbridge to arrest the Govenor, will be portrayed by Ed McGuinn. William Franklin's wife, Elizabeth, will be played by Kimberly Reddan, and their son, William Temple Franklin, by Kevin Connelly, Jr. Also appearing will be Jakob Trinidad as John Lazenby, Steven Allegretta as Private Preston, and Tony Sattilaro as Josiah Aubrey.
The new script is by Association First V. P. Greg Caggiano. There are some elements remaining, such as parts of the narration, from the original, decades-old script used by the association, author unknown. In late 2011, Caggiano and actors at the time, Gene Hoyas and Kurt Epps, began to tweak the script by adding some new characters and dialogue.
In January of 1776, New Jersey's Provincial Congress ordered William Franklin to be held under house arrest at his Perth Amboy mansion. He was ordered not to conduct any government business, but defiantly called for the assembly to convene as usual that spring. On June 19, 1776, a militia unit under the command of General Nathaniel Heard of neighboring Woodbridge arrived to place the Governor under arrest. He was sent to prison in Connecticut, never to see his wife Elizabeth or their home in Perth Amboy again. Elizabeth Franklin remained at the house until the British briefly occupied Perth Amboy in 1777, allowing her to flee to British-held New York where she died. William Franklin was released in a prisoner exchange 1778 and remained a leader in the loyalist communities of New York and Nova Scotia before being exiled to England 1782. He died there in 1814.
The arrest of Franklin marked the end of Great Britain's claim on New Jersey as an English colony. But it is also a poignant reminder of how the difficult choices people were forced to make had very real personal costs.
The reenactment of Franklin's arrest is the highlight of The Proprietary House Museum's events, providing a reminder of the rich history at the House and Perth Amboy. 'Paranormal Pursuits' Weekend
The Virginia Infantry Ghost Hunters (www.tvigh.org) will share the results of their research at Gettysburg and various other battlefields throughout the Mid-Atlantic. Based in New Jersey, the group uses video and sound equipment to identify the presence of spiritual activity, in the form of orbs and electronic voice phenomena, and will present their evidence to HCSV visitors.
Local paranormal investigation group, Truth Paranormal Investigators of South Jersey, will also share the findings of their recent investigation at the Village and demonstrate their ghost hunting equipment in the Welcome Center throughout the weekend. Guests can also explore the Village’s own paranormal past and present during a ghost walk led by longtime Village staff member, Shirley Stefanovicz, at 11:00 am, 12:30 pm and 2:00 pm on both Saturday and Sunday. At various buildings throughout the Village, Stefanovicz will detail the supernatural experiences had by Village staff members as well as the evidence of ghostly presences discovered by visiting mediums and psychics.
Author Gregory Young will offer a reading from his book, A Father, A Son and A House Full of Ghosts, a true story of what it was like living in a real haunting, at 11:30 am and 3:00 pm on both Saturday and Sunday. In addition, visitors can experience the spirit photography of Greg Geraci, have their cards and palms read, try their hands at divining rods, and learn about phrenology and the rise of spiritualism in the 19th century.
Historic Cold Spring Village is a non-profit, open-air living history museum that portrays the daily life of a rural South Jersey community of the Early American period. It features 26 restored historic structures on a 30-acre site. From late June to early September, interpreters and artisans in period clothing preserve the trades, crafts and heritage of "the age of homespun." Fun and educational activities for children are featured Tuesday through Sunday, with special events every weekend through mid-September.
Historic Cold Spring Village is located at 720 Route 9, three miles north of Cape May City and four miles south of Rio Grande. Admission during the season is $10 for adults and $8 for children ages 3 to 12. Children under 3 are admitted free. Unlimited free admission is available with Village membership. Remembering the Paterson Silk Strike of 1913
Lambert Castle, the Victorian-era mansion located on the Garrett Mountain Reservation on the border between Paterson and Clifton, will be home to an exhibit highlighting the Paterson Silk Strike of 1913 now through October 6, 2013. The exhibit, entitled "We Had to be Rebels: Remembering the Paterson Silk Strike of 1913." This year marks the centennial of the landmark 1913 Paterson Silk Strike, which would forever change the face of labor relations in the Silk City. Thousands of workers walked away from their looms to be herded into court rooms and jail cells in a strike that took months to resolve.
